East China's Shandong province is a major marine province with a marine area of nearly 160,000 square kilometers, which is almost equal to its land area. The coastline is 3,505 kilometers long, accounting for about one-sixth of the national total. The geological conditions for mineral formation in the marine areas are favorable, and the resource potential is huge with broad prospects for mineral exploration.
China's first undersea coal mine was discovered beneath the southern sea area of Rizhao, Shandong — a region also identified as the country's only coastal giant gold field. Recently, the province has also made significant progress in zircon mine exploration, which holds important application value across various industries and fields.
"The target drilling site is located 25 meters below the sea surface. So far, we have completed 190 meters of drilling in the target exploration area. The analysis and testing of all core samples will be completed in mid-October," said Zhang Hao, a project leader of a zircon mine exploration.

To date, a variety of mineral resources, such as petroleum, natural gas, coal, gold, rare earths, and geothermal energy have been discovered in the sea areas of Shandong. High-quality geothermal resources that meet the standards of medicinal mineral water have also been found on several islands. In 2024, the province achieved an added value of 20.8 billion yuan ($2.92 billion) in marine mining, ranking first in the country.
